The colors in this style tile work well, because it ties in with the theme of Mexican food which contributes to the culture of the restaurant. The typography also complements the colors for the overall theme. What needs work is the texture. Something that would be more visual to help customers see what kind of atmosphere the restaurant would bring.

Assignment 03 – “Design Brief”

Objectives and Goals for the new site: The objective of the new site is to bring more customers into the restaurant. This can be done with better visual design, appealing food photography, and more contact information clearly displayed on the website. Social media will also help to reach out to more people. One goal is to get rid of the outdated design of the current site, which was done with Adobe Flash, and replace it with something more modern. This site will have larger images and nice typography so that people will not have a hard time reading it. Another goal would be to have all the information contained on this one site, and not have a link to a separate one, like the current site has now. This can be accomplished with multiple web pages.

Target Audience: This would include people 21 years and older, because there is a great wine selection along with other alcoholic drinks available. “Foodies”- a person who has an interest in consumption of food – will also be part of the target audience, especially those interested in authentic Mexican food.

Scope of the Project: The number of web pages for this website will be three. It will also be a responsive website, which will be helpful to those who look up the website on their tablets and mobile devices.

Overall look/style: This new website will be visually appealing, with vibrant photos of the restaurant and dishes that they cook, on the homepage. This site will be user friendly, with contact information clearly seen and a map to help customers locate it. The navigation will be located in the header of the homepage, very simple. The menu will be cut into sections that will be more pleasing to the eyes. The colors will be a little darker and more subtle to give that “restaurant” feel to the site while still relating to the theme of Mexican food.

Assignment 02 – Research for Final Project

                   “CaCao Mexican Restaurant”

Capture

This is the restaurant that I will be designing a new website for. The existing website has some strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

  1. Color theme There is a good contrast between dark colors and bright colors. This ties in well with the overall “Mexican” theme.
  2. Information- The homepage is very informative. It tells you the restaurant’s location, menu, wine selection, photo gallery, history of the restaurant, rating, and lots more.
  3. Navigation- The different links a user could click on, are clearly seen.

Weaknesses:

  1. Cluttered- The homepage is too busy. There are so many different places you can click on, that it becomes a little overwhelming.
  2. TMI (“too much information”)– There are a lot of unnecessary details listed on the homepage. Topics that should be hidden elsewhere, maybe in the footer, like extra things someone might want to know.
  3. Hours of Operation- This is listed way at the bottom of the page, it can barely be seen because it is in a font size and color that is not readable. This is one of the main details someone would want to know about the restaurant, so it should be somewhere at the top, clearly seen.
  4. Navigation- When you click on the menu button, there is no way to navigate back to the homepage. That is definitely a problem if someone wants to go back to the homepage and keep browsing.

“Interview” the client

Goals for the website: To get more people to come in the restaurant. This would include reaching out to a more diverse audience, instead of just pinpointing one specific group of people. Make the site more attractive to motivate people to come and try our authentic food.

Target Audience: We want a range of people who are 21 and older because we do sell alcoholic beverages. There is a great wine selection served here. Also we would like to attract more “foodies” – people who are looking for authentic Mexican food to try.

“Look and feel”: We would like the site to be attractive to younger crowd, perhaps with social media on the homepage. Also vibrant colors would be pleasing to the eyes. Photos of the restaurant would be more inviting of the interior and the food that is served here. “Find us” section would help people to look us up and get all the contact information they would need to come here.

Competitive Analysis

“El Torito”Visual Design is well thought out. The media (slideshow, photos) makes the restaurant seem more inviting. Very clever to put different “deals” they have on different days. Navigation is clearly accessible and has good topics of interest. Content has a good balance between information and media. There is not too much information. There is a CTA button on almost every slide on the slideshows, as well as an “Order Now”. Functionality is good with the site. Everything works well together. Community Building- there is social media on the homepage.

“La Cabana”- (VD) A lot of dull colors, with some graphics but not organized well. (Nav) Hard to see at the top. (Content) Very cluttered, with too many graphics. There is a CTA button on the homepage. Functionality is alright, some links are a little confusing.  Community Building– there is no social media on this website, but there is a way to contact the restaurant.

“Taco Bell”– (VD) It is fairly simple and captivating. The dark color does make it seem a little serious. (Nav) It is at the top and bottom of the site, the font could stand out more. (Content) Good amount of details and photos. There are a few (CTA) buttons. Functionality of the site is good, all the links coincide. Community Building is done with lots of social media on the site located in the footer.

“Chipotle”- (VD) The colors are captivating but it seems too busy with lots of links to click on. (Nav) works well and has hierarchy which helps users a lot to navigate through the site. (Content) There is a lot of graphics that draw more attention than the small font of links and other pages. (CTA) There are buttons that do call your attention and are specified with a different color font than the rest of the site so it stands out more. (Functionality) of the site is good for those who would like to learn more about the company and the food. Community Building is VERY BIG on this site. In fact there is a link that leads to another website that talks about local people and festivals that are held in the restaurant’s name.
